Drosophila: a second century in science

The II International conference “Drosophila in experimental genetics” started its work at I.I. Mechnikov ONU on the 7th of September. Genetics researchers from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine came to Odessa to introduce and discuss the latest research results with the use of Drosophila – a species of fruit fly.
Drosophila is an insect with a short life cycle (10 days), a low quantity of chromosomes (2n=8), a presence of polytene chromosomes in a raw of organs and a large amount of visible mutation display. These qualities made the fruit flies very valuable to genetics researchers: Morgan Tomas Hunt used them for research first in 1908. At this time the genomes of 12 species of drosophila are fully decoded. The genes of these flies coincide with human genes by 60%, so experiments are done to research interactions between genes, genetic development, evaluation of medicine affects, in the search of a cure for cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases etc.
Awards will be presented to young scientists, who made the most interesting research reports during the closing ceremony of the international conference, on the 10th of September at 11:00. The winners will be determined by decision of Ukrainian science club members.
