Slavic scholars from all over Ukraine gathered in Odessa

  Academic readings in commemoration of an outstanding linguist, a corresponding member of NAS of Ukraine Yuri Karpenko, began today at the University of Odessa. Scientists from Kiev, Chernovtsy, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, and other Ukrainian cities began discussing issues of Slavic Studies, which fall within the scope of Yuri Karpenko’s scientific interests. Among them there are - the history of linguistics, language style studies, folklore and literature, onomastics (a branch of linguistics studying proper names, the history of their emergence and transformation).
  "Yuri - a great man with profound knowledge and inexhaustible scientific boldness", - said Vasily Ray, Ph.D., professor, department head of General and Slavic Linguistics of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
  Yuri Karpenko (1929-2009) - the world-famous Ukrainian linguist. He was born in the town of Malin in Zhitomir region, received an honors diploma at the University of Lviv, where he also independently studied Chinese, German, French, Czech, Bulgarian and Polish. Since 1968 he worked at the Odessa University (head of department of Ukrainian, Russian and Slavic Studies). He was an author of over 500 scientific papers. Yuri Karpenko founded the world's authoritative Odessa onomastics school. The scientist researched phonetics, phonology, history of linguistics and Ukrainian ethnology, Slavic studies, history of the Ukrainian language, ethno-and sociolinguistics, etymology, etc.
  Academic Readings in Memory of Yuri Karpenko will continue until the 9th of October.
