Alexander Thomson, a prominent linguist and the first phonetics researcher in Odessa, was born 150 years ago

  A boy was born on the 15th of June, 1860 not far from Tartu to a family of the forester Johan Thomson. Emilia – the mother of the future professor of linguistics and pioneer of phonetic research in Odessa – did not speak a word of Russian. This did not deprive Alexander Ivanovich Thomson from becoming a prominent linguist and a pioneer of phonetic research in Odessa, lay grounds to Armenian studies and devote many of his works to Russian and Comparative language studies. Since 1897 Thomson lived in Odessa and worked in the Novorossiysky Imperatorsky University (now named Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University
  Alexander Thomson passed away in 1935. The Odessa University gained two departments, where theoretic and practical studies of languages are conducted in more then 10 specialties. However, the work of the first phonetics researcher in Odessa has not lost its applicability.
